Phase II reporting
Phase II awardees must submit Interim Progress Reports, and a Phase II Final Report. Interim reports should be submitted each quarter mark of the project.
If the instructions on this website conflict with instructions provided to you by NSF via email or another NSF web page or Research.gov, the instructions on this page supersede all other instructions!
Research.gov indicates that the Interim Progress Reports are optional. However, please disregard this statement as Interim Progress Reports are a requirement of all Phase II awards.
The Phase II Final Report is due 15 days after the award end date and the status will change to “overdue” after 90 days. However, please note that the final payment will not be made available until the final report has been approved AND the Project Outcomes report has been submitted. Also, final payments will not be made and pending future proposals will not be processed until any overdue final reports are submitted and approved.
For award general conditions please reference the appropriate link: Phase I or Phase II.
Note: The Interim Progress Report (IPR) reporting period is auto populated to include only the date that the report was created instead of the full range dates (e.g., 05/01/2013 - 05/01/2013). This is a problem with the system that you cannot correct; please proceed with the report as normal.
All reporting is administered through Research.gov. Please see Research.gov reporting information for technical guidance and tips on the submission process. Contact the Research.gov help desk by email at rgov@nsf.gov or call 1-800-381-1532. The requirements expected for the SBIR/STTR program are detailed below.
Interim Progress Report
Interim Progress Reports are required for reporting progress at six-month intervals throughout the project. Note: If you receive supplemental funding that extends the project, you are required to continue to provide progress reports covering work on the base award and any supplemental awards, typically at six-month intervals until the award ends.
There are two components to include with each interim report and the final report:
- Technical Narrative
- Filled Phase II Interim Report PDF.
Please download and follow the instructions in Phase II Interim Report PDF.
Final Report
The report must be submitted via research.gov no later than 15 days after the end of your award. We encourage you to include not only the data you obtained during the project, but also discuss the results and how they may inform your future technical and commercialization plans. The final report must show your results and actual data for each research objective and task funded by NSF. You should also discuss progress made by your company during Phase I in other, non-NSF-funded aspects, such as business development, customer and partner engagements, fundraising, and building your team.
As with interim reports, please download and follow the instructions in Phase II Interim Report PDF. The technical narrative for the final report should follow the same format used for interim reports, but should cover work done throughout the entire project.
At the conclusion of any SBIR/STTR award, you are also required to submit a brief (maximum-800-word) project outcomes report via research.gov. This report will be made available to the public and should not contain confidential or proprietary information. This report is not reviewed or approved by NSF. For more information, view NSF Report Your Progress and Outcomes page.
If your Phase II proposal submitted in the year 2019 or earlier, please download and follow the instructions in Phase II Interim Report for 2019 or earlier PDF.
